Be cautious of websites that show too many images with trendy effects such as selective color. Effects that are well-done can be lovely, but overdone special effects can quickly date a portrait.

* Read the photographer's bio. Look for clues that the photographer takes an approach you like. For instance, does the photographer take time to bond with children before launching into a portrait session? It's more important that the photographer "click" (no pun intended!) with your family than it is to have a long list of credentials.
